Font Analysis ☮ ☮ ☮

Today I will be analysing the final fonts that I have decided to bring to my shortlist for my groups film, although none are definitely going to be used each member of our group will be designing their favourite titles and we will all come to a decision on which to use. We intended to call our film the alleyway but we felt this wasn't as effective as it could be, so we decided to keep it short and snappy and go with " The Alley".

My first title that I have chosen caught my eye with its style of being scratched and messy made me see that this font fitted well with what our content consists of, being murder and mystery. Though downsides I would say of this font was that the connotations I would associate with it are of the horror genre and with our genre being thriller it may be confusing to get that from this font. I made the font size large as i think if it was smaller it would look less dangerous and bold and so I put the size at 125 and i think it stands perfectly, I did not know whether the colour brought down the effectiveness of the font as it showed it wasn't as the evil an darkness to which I wanted but though against a dark background the title would pop and show that the alley of which spoken contains a majorly important scene and source of plot. But with the black outline I feel as if the text is still bold and can pop off a lightly coloured background, but I would steer more towards a dark background to fit with the genre of our film.

I really liked this font as it showed a sense of mystery, as with this font people would tend to stereotype this with magazine cutouts to form a letter of threat, This also is linked to younger people, and with our film situating around teenagers, I feel like this connotes our film of being based around threatening teenagers. The colour scheme I also really liked there is both black and white incorporated and I feel like both show that there is good and evil within characters, with white showing connotations of purity and innocence and black showing evil and danger, which I believe explains both our protagonists and antagonists well. Again I believe our title has to be large and bold so my font size is 125 to stand out, I believe that a light background with this font as the blur surrounding the font makes it more suitable with a white background.

The sense from this font I got was that was that something that was once fine has been damaged as it appears the text was perfectly in tact and someone has scratched it making it messy and unpleasant. The text size is at 125 as I believe whatever font we decide on it should be large to fit with our theme of being bold and dangerous. I also like the monochrome theme running through my fonts as I think the idea I'm trying to get across is that our plot is in black and white you see it as it happens and you're waiting for the characters to find out. Although I don't like the wait the Y at the end of alley drifts on its own away from the rest of the title. With the feel in our film being set at an abandoned area (the alley), the title seems to show that this could be a sign that we could incorporate in this font within the film perhaps, to show a sense of continuity.

Font and Title Analysis ☮ ☮ ☮

Title Decision

Our results have shown us that the most popular film title was "Alleyway" we have yet to decide if we will call it "the alleyway" or just "alleyway", we want to judge this on how well our font will look with the title. We think our title is effective as alleyway as both the public seem attracted by it and also it shows a big part of our films plot with our most important scene being set in an alleyway where our protagonist gets assaulted.

Font Ideas

The font will play a big part on our film as if who we want to portray our film on first impressions.
Some ideas are from what we take inspiration from and the following films are the ones that got myself and my group's eye's as we thought that they would be a possible contender to be the font for our film title.

Font Inspirations

Into The Woods

The "Into The Woods" font appealed very much to our group as it showed similarities to our films setting, with our film being set majority nan alleyway in a wedlock environment and would fit into the creepy woods category. We really liked how the word "WOODS" was only in the font of the strange leafless and creepy trees forming the word, as we believe it gives more on an emphasis on the word and shows that the woods is a creepy place in this film. With the moon hanging very largely in the background giving some colour to the dark setting.

2GUNS

The "2GUNS" font seems to hold a strong connotation of an action type film, due to the boldness and size of the font being very large and in black it sets a toughness to the film that you would associate with action and in our film we have the action, where Tara gets suffocated to death which again seems very dark and bold , so something plain and simple and to the point sets a serious tone that we would like to have on our film.

Zero Dark Thirty

We really liked the "zero dark thirty" font as it showed the connotations of technology showing a pixelated computerised white font seeming that the film will involve heavy technology. Our group likes this idea as technology in our opening film holds both god and bad moods and systems, such as the negative voicemail message Ellie leaves on Tara's phone which shows a sense of hope destroyed when Tara is revealed to have been murdered at this point but then is shown as a sense of hope when Ellie receives a Text message saying "Help" from Tara after the audience believes her to be dead and will hopefully lead Ellie to finding Tara and saving her life. So with this we though that because technology shows a lot of power with both emotion and characters we believe that it would be a good idea to use this as a connotations of the film in being our font.

Behind the Scenes- Assault Scene ☮ ☮ ☮

Here I will be showing you what my group got up to when filming our assault scene where we filmed the shots that would take up the majority of our film opening. All together the film took 3 hours to shoot and there were plenty of options we had to use at the end of the day.

Here is the first thing we filmed on our day of shooting, this is where Nadiye (Tara) walks up a mysterious looking pathway leading up to the woods, we liked this shot as it shows her entering the intimidating location and makes the audience try to perceive whats going to happen. This shot was relatively easy to film with Mae filing as Nadiye walks up the path, the path was very long but we wanted to film Nadiye talking the entire length of it so we could decide from where we wanted to have her being seen as we also wanted to incorporate her walking over the bridge which is directly after the path and we didn't want to show Nadiye walking the entire length of the path as we believe the shot would have gone on for way too long, and we got this shot in one take which we will then trim down when editing.

Here we can see Mae filming with the Nikon camera, at a low canted angle shot where Nadiye is seen walking her dog over the rusted and murky green coloured bridge, we wanted to incorporate this specific shot so that we could give the impression that the scenes to follow would be strange and so this shot would create the distorted and eerie look that we wanted. Also with Mae being at a low angle this would show Nadiye as a powerful character which would have given her prevalence in the shot to make her seem like an important character, for she is our protagonist.Again we had Nadiye walk the entire length of the bridge just so that we could decide from what point Nadiye would start on the bridge in the shot, but we knew that we wanted to end the shot immediately after Nadiye gets off the bridge as we want to end all shots sharply.

This was the shot that we took that had taken us a few times to get right as with our actress's facial expression we found it difficult to show a dead look and wanted her to seem as realistic as we could. In the particular shot we had Katy filming from a extremely low angle so we had an eyeshot with Nadiye as she played dead on the ground, this is when I ( the antagonist) leant over the camera to grab the plastic bag that concealed Nadiyes face and would expose her lifelessness. This was a quick shot just so that the audience could gather that the antagonist had succeeded and had murdered our protagonist Tara, we wanted to make them question for why she had been murdered as we didn't let on at any point a reason to why she would have been a target to anyone especially to the point of murder.

Here we have some of the behind the scenes videos one is of the assault scene when Tara gets suffocated to death, and the second part we filmed of Nadiye's mouth being in shot where we saw her breathing rapidly and is going to be towards the end of the assault scene as we though this would be a great ending shot right before the climax of the scene. The video below is of behind the scenes of the shots we took for when our two antagonists were conversing with each other.

Saftey On Set ☮ ☮ ☮

With certain scenes in our film we had to make sure that our actors were safe and didn't come to any harm whilst filming particularly risky scenes. The only time we had to do this was when filming the multiple shots of our actress, Nadiye ,when her character ,Tara ,is being suffocated by a plastic bag.

To over come this problem we had the idea to film different angles of "Tara" being suffocated so we could have only certain parts of Nadiye's face in shot, this meant using an extreme closeup effect when doing this, luckily we found this more effective with the scene in the long run and so found the scene successful to shoot. The actual strategy of this was having two identical carrier bag and cutting one with a whole where Nadiye's mouth lined up so she could breath through her mouth, here is where we would film Nadiye's upper features from her nose up, and then the second bag with a whole cut where Nadiye's nose would be so she can breath through her nose, and is where we would film Nadiye as she breathed heavily through her mouth in an extreme close up shot, and to make sure that the mage looked tight enough we secured the bag at the back with a rubber band.

Questionnaire Results ☮ ☮ ☮

Previously I posted our questionnaire for which we were going to ask the public  about film to find out what sort of interest they have in our genre and what they would usually expect form the film, this is to both conform and subvert from their expectations in order to have originality but also some stereotypes involved. So these pie charts will show how the public's answers to our questions.

Shots and Edits Incorporated into our Film ☮ ☮ ☮

In our opening scene we wanted to incorporate as many different editing types and shot types as we could to get the highest grade we could and to also reach the best of our abilities with the opening scene, and to also portray as many different emotions as we could through the shot and editing types to show the exact connotations of the characters and setting

Shot Reverse Shot: This edit is used when our two antagonists are exchanging conversation once our protagonist is murdered. We do this in different angles throughout the exchange to show a sense of where they are meeting and how the two feel, which we portray as our murderer being calm and our other antagonists accomplice as nervous and inquisitive.

Pan:
This shot is shown at the very beginning of our scene with the establishing shot, that shows our location of the woods at a murky and abandoned area which will show connotations of fear and eeriness.

Match on Action:
This edit is shown when our Protagonist Ellie is seen calling our main character Tara, when she is at the coffee shop, we see her hand and phone screen in a close up shot where we see Tara's name in bold over her screen, so that the audience can identify who she is calling.

Extreme Close-Up Shot:
In this shot we had our protagonist Tara, with her face being covered by the plastic bag only seeing her mouth rapidly breath the bag in and out showing her gasping for breath, this was wanted by our group to see the intenseness of the scene as our protagonist is seen at a fateful end.

Over The Shoulder Shot:
This edit/shot was used again during our antagonist's conversation about the death of Tara, this was so that we could see who was in the shot and the body language of the other character and see how the react to the opposite characters language and body language as well.

Close-Up Shot:
This particular shot was shown on various occasions throughout the scenes, in the coffee shop when our protagonist Ellie is seen angrily leaving a message on a main protagonist,Tara's phone, this was so that we could see the full emotion of the actress when delivering her bitter voice message. The other time was when we see again our main protagonist being suffocated, the difference between this shot and the extreme close up shot was that the top of our victims head is seen and can see in the corner our antagonists costume and mask.

Cantered Angle:
This shot was used when our protagonist and victim, Tara, across the bridge to show that something is odd and distressful about this locations, and will hopefully show the audience that something fateful will occur in this location.

Two Shot:
This shot is used twice in our opening scene, in both the assault scene when both Tara and Rosemary are seen struggling in the strangling scene, and also when the two antagonists are discussing what has occurred in the woods with Tara's fateful death.

Mood Board ☮ ☮ ☮

The Balaclava:
The balaclava is in my mood board as it was vital to us when putting our film ideas together to create our antagonist as we wanted to remain the sense of mystery and awe within this character, so to do this we wanted to have the balaclava being worn by our antagonist, to show the connotations of crime, violence and anonymity.

The Call Screen:
The calling screen was again an idea that we wanted to incorporate in a close up shot so that the audience would see both of who the protagonist was calling but to also identify that technology is a big part of this particular generations life, as it is a vital source of communication.

The Carrier Bag:
This was again a big part of the film as we wanted to be as original as we can with the murder weapon as we didn't want to follow with al stereotypes of guns and knives, or even leaving it up to the imagination with only seeing the victim being dragged away. So we decided to go hardcore with a slow and infrequent way of death.

The Jack Russell Dog:
The dog was seen as an important part to our scenes as we wanted to show a purpose for why our protagonist would be walking in the woods alone, as we didn't want to have our actress walk alone in the woods for no reason at all as it would show no purpose at all to why she is travelling in a scary place alone, we want to show our protagonist as somewhat intelligent.

The Coffee Shop:
This was ideal to incorporate in our opening scene and mood board as it shows a normal place where people their age would go to meet up when hanging out, this will show the realism in the scene. Normality is a big part in our opening scene as we want everything that happens to seem as though it could happen to the audience.

The Woods:
This was the only idea that we wanted to conform to stereotype as a typical scary place to go/die, as we wanted to have the audience know that this location portrays evil and sinister feelings so that they can try and predict the storyline and what's going to happen, And the woods is a very scary and abandoned place that is ideal for a killing scene.

Costume Research ☮ ☮ ☮

Our group put a lot of thought into the costumes that our characters will be wearing in order to fit in with the genre of our film and the moods we want the audience to feel towards each individual character. We also will have the colour scheme of their outfit to be identifiable to the connotations we are trying to portray e.g. black-evil, white- innocence.

Protagonist one- Tara
Being the protagonist in our opening scene we wanted to portray a look of casual but yet brightly coloured clothes, we decided to have Nadiye dress in a hoodie which would show a comfortable and relaxed look to show that she is unsuspecting and clueless of the fact that she is going to be attacked.

We also wanted to incorporate a reason to why Nadiye would be walking in the woods, so we used Nadiye's dog in order to show a relatable habit to do during the day with the audience as it seems to be a planned schedule that we wanted to portray to the audience so that it seems the attacker knows what "Tara" does everyday.

But even though she doesn't have any extremely dark colours, we still have incorporated a darker shade of the clothes she wears to still show that it's a dark setting.

Antagonist One- Rosemary

Obviously with being the attacker/killer we wanted to shoe connotations of evil and power and also fear, so we dressed the character "Rosemary" in all black everything, but the lining of the coat is red which we thought could have been a problem, but then we thought that the connotations of this colour is blood and violence which would also fit into the connotations of the character that we wanted to portray.

We also had the character have a balaclava on which remained the mystery and whodunnit themes throughout the clip, until we see her face toward the end of the clip.

Antagonist Two- Bella
Here we also wanted to chow connotations of evil but with bells costume we wanted to show that she isn't as evil as Rosemary as she wasn't the one who had actually attacked/murdered her, and so we dressed Bella in a dark coloured coat we we zipped up over Katy's shirt, as we though that her shirt didn't fit into the connotations of the character.

We also had her in black jeans to show the dark evilness of her character as well, to show some sense of partnership between her character and rosemary's so that you could put some comparisons within the two characters.

Protagonist Two-Ellie
For this character we wanted to show her emotions of anger and nervousness, but still wanted to remain the sense of innocence as she is still a victim type in the opening, as we see this character as a sense of hope to the main protagonist Tara when she has been attacked as she is the recipient to the text which would make her he saviour if she went to her rescue.

Due to this we wanted to have her dressed in dark colours to show her angry mood but still show innocence by indeed have colour to her outfit.

The Woods-Location Setting ☮ ☮ ☮

We decided that we wanted to create an eerie and creepy mood, meaning we thought having it be set in the woods would be effective for what we want. so we went to fetcham woods to film the of what is going to consume the majority our opening scene.

We thought that this path showed a very outlined route which fades into the distance which exactly the look we were trying to pull off with wanting the audience gets the creepy and mysterious moods. We done multiple shots of our protagonist walking up this path in different angles in order to show match on action and a complexity, which showed some professional looks and also shows the audience more of the surroundings when we see the girl walk towards the bridge.

We really liked the appearance of the tall skinny trees that tower over our protagonist in the background, it showed her in a very vulnerable state as the trees show a purpose in belittling her, and showing her her as a weak character. The brown leaves also shown on the floor show a messy and unattended look which help to show the look of abandonment, so that the audience can infer that hardy anyone actually attends this location.

This lake shows a very murky and grim look which shows the audience that what's going to happen will be a sore sight, which fits in with what happens moments after seeing this our protagonist gets suffocated to death with a bag, but we made sure to be safe and let our actress breathe which i will talk about further in another post.

We liked that this lake was beneath a bridge, the railing were rusted and a dirty green which showed an unflattering site and also an abandoned look, which we wanted to portray so that the audience knew that this place would be deserted and that no one would be here.

This is the alley we chose to set the murder/assault scene, as it was a tight and compact setting, which fits with the chosen death type which is suffocation, which is also fitting with tight and compact space. the leaves trees also make the creepiness more effect as it shows skinny like branches. The ground was particularly muddy which makes the audience infer the weather is bad, which can be linked to the plot.

The colours seen in this shot also are very dull and dark also making the audience view this scene as a negative, where they can infer that nothing positive will come out of this situation. The barbed wire at the aide of the alley also show a view of no escape and a dangerous obstacle, the wire although hard to see is rusted again showing the sense of an old and abandoned area which people do not visit.

This image shows our antagonists meeting in a cramped and out of sight alley, where are cast member Mae is filling in a shot reverse shot. also surrounding the two characters was barbed wire fencing and dark green bushes with tall skinny and leaves trees towering over them, which also puts them into a negative light, making the audience take a disliking to the two characters.

When filming this we done all of one characters lines in one go and then with the other character in order to remain continuity in camera positions even though we moved to different angles during the conversation.

by this time it was starting to get dark, but we needed it to be light enough outside in order to be able to see the characters, but we thought the slightly darker setting was helpful to express a darker mood with these two characters.

Sound Track Research ☮ ☮ ☮

For Our film's soundtrack we are going to be using non copyrighted music to put over certain scenes we want to emphasize with it's emotion to make sure the audience knows what type of mood the certain scene in visual is going to be like. These are our shortlisted music ideas, although for our killing scene we have found a piece of music that we think will really suit the scene well, as we can imagine matched with our scene it will fit perfectly.

Opening Scene with Full Friendship Group:Here we want to portray a a mixed mood, as we want to show the audience that at this moment the scene is innocent and normal at the moment, but we also want it to be eerie enough to show that somethings looming, and so that the audience should pick up the vibe on the genre of the film (thriller). The music also needs to be dramatic enough to show the emotions of the characters in focus, as the friends will be very hostile towards each other.

Coffee Scene
The music for this scene also needs to be dramatic, so we wanted to have a slow paced maybe piano based piece, as the character in this scene will be exposing the emotions of agitated, nervous and upset, as the reason for her going here is to repair a friendship that has gone sour. We want the audience to get the mood of drama but also the sign of possible hope, this is to build tension and anticipation of whether the friends will reconcile their friendship or not. During this scene we will be cross cutting to "Tara" walking her dog also which means the music has to fit into both scenarios, but luckily we want to build the tension on both ends of the shots.
Parallel- Coffee scene 1
New Frontiers- Coffee scene 2
Killing/Assault Scene

This is a very important scene for our background track, as this will be the most action filled part in our film opening, with the heavy use of violence and fast paced transitioning shots. The mood we want to portray is danger and fear, as the shots in this scene will transition very quickly in order to show the rapidness of the scene so the audience has to gather what they take in abruptly as the antagonist of the scene comes in suddenly with immediate violence which we want to make the audience dislike this character straight away and the music and violence in the scene used is our tools in doing so, and we only have one piece of music that we really like and think will match perfectly with our scene style.

Haunted-Killing/Assault scene

Hand movement/ Text Scene
This scene is going to have to be both sad but somewhat motivational as this is our closing scene, we want to portray the two characters (Tara and Ellie) in a upset but also hopeful state, as Tara will be severely injured and Ellie annoyed at Tara for "standing her up", we want the sense of hope that Tara will survive and also for Ellie to find out about Tara and find her. this scene will result in Tara texting Ellie the word "help", which will only show a bloody screened hand and Ellie's shocked reaction, we want to insinuate through this music that Ellie will go to Tara's aid and help her to survive. We have managed to get the shortlist down to two music pieces.

No Winners- last scene 1
Last Dawn - last scene 2

First Day Of Filming ☮ ☮ ☮

This is the behind the scenes of our opening film scene, where i'll be telling you on how the first set of filming went and our strong and low points of the day.

Katy, Mae, Nadiye and I went down to a local coffee shop, Costa Coffee, and showed our only actor in this particular scene,Mae Aka. Ellie, sitting outside waiting for our protagonist "Tara". We want the scene to be as realistic as possible, so we chose this particular location to keep this theme.  We also thought that fitting with the storyline our characters are the type to meet up at a coffee shop and this is a personality trait of them both having this as one of their ways of conversing and meeting up for people of their age, and also to show the type of shop Ellie is in we have her holding a coffee so that if the audience had not already known, it was a coffee meet up.

Here I've incorporated a picture of us film the scene, this one in particular, shows Katy film a slight high angle medium close-up shot of our actor, Mae, where we see her on the phone to "Tara", who is appearing to have run late, we went with this shot as it emphasised with "Ellie" and helped us view the emotion whilst being on voicemail, and how annoyed she appears when she can't get through to Tara. We also wanted it close for when she was speaking into the phone as we can see further more how angry she is with Tara for not showing up as when she speaks is more angry.

This image shows Katy filming Mae again in a wider medium close up shot, which focuses on her surrounding more, where we can see her coffee cup, and wears he watch which shows that time plays a big part in this scene, with Mae's clothing we wanted o portray a serious and dark mood so we had her wearing dark clothes to portray this, but not so dark that she would be perceived as the antagonist, so had her wear her olive green parker. Further with the watch we wanted to incorporate this when she looks at it for the time, instead of her phone as the mobile phone has already been in focus, With the phone we wanted to use it to show a theme of youthfulness, and youths all have phones, and this is the biggest form of communication with this generation in particular and incorporating this means we would show a certain age to the audience when viewing this.

The final image I have is when we filmed Mae in a close up shot showing her angrily talking down the phone to Tara's voicemail, this was used in a closeup so we could explicitly see her whilst she's almost yelling at the phone, so that we can see her emotion clearly, which is irritated.

We made sure to film when it was still light out so around 14:30 pm, this was in order to show that the tension in the film was still quite low as if we filmed at night it would of shown a darker and more scary mood. But also to make it easier to film as we wouldn't need to have lighting equipment to have set up and carry around.

Myself and Mae edited this scene on Adobe premiere, where we found it relatively easy to cut the clips in order to make the scene effective, and so we can add the next scene on easily when we have one already perfected scene completed. All we have to add to the scene is music but we have decided to leave this till after the filming and editing is completed, all we know it that we want to add a slow paced and possibly violent based piece of music to show the drama in the scene and what is to come.
